Because Dee McGuire worked in biotech, was skeptical of easy answers, and didn't come to discover functional medicine until after she had already found significant relief from a fundamental dietary change. This candid memoir of health and healing is concisely written without hype or plays for sympathy, and is more powerful because of that. She acknowledges the problems inherent in both the traditional and functional medical models and doesn't shy away from frank discussion of sourcing and paying for the care (and the food). Functional medicine is a controversial topic and so this book may not be for everyone, but those fighting chronic illnesses and exhausted by the quest for simple health will find much validation in these pages. I can relate to the frustration Dee experienced in dealing with some professionals in the medical field. Dee challenged herself to continue her journey to improve her health, despite the lack of support from health insurance to cover the cost of some of the treatments. By sharing her journey, Dee has encouraged us all to be our own health advocate. Thanks a million Dee for sharing your story! - 5.0 out of 5 stars from bamagirl -- Well written, and a good read for anyone with autoimmune issues : I enjoyed reading Dee's descriptions of her initial health issues, a lot similar to what I have experienced. Especially when you feel like your body is crazy...or yourself. To read what she went through, the doctors along the way, and her trial and error approach to feel better and know, there might be an answer to the craziness. I personally have multiple autoimmune diseases, but no pain like she had. I hope to try some or all of what helped her in the future ( Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2021 )

The author's journey to find answers to those issues which seemed to baffle the traditional medical field gave me insight into some of my own pain issues, yet undiagnosed. Her persistence to help herself find answers to improve her quality of life is inspiring. We seldom hear about functional medicine, much less find doctors who respect it's possibilities.
